Young Academy Officer, with The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Young Academy of Scotland

Fixed-term contract of employment (Maternity Cover) from 09 January 2017 to 08 December 2017
£22,432 per annum,
35 hours per week,
Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm with 1 hour unpaid for lunch.
Occasional work will be required out-with these normal hours.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) is looking for someone to support the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (YAS).  In this role you will report to the RSE Young Academy Manager, but will work directly with the Young Academy Facilitating Group on a day to day basis.
The external customer groups with which you will work will include: Civil servants, Members of Parliament, and a range of individuals from the academic, business, media, public and third sectors.  You will also work alongside all YAS members, primarily the Facilitating Group, treasurer and leaders of the working groups; all RSE staff, primarily the YAS Manager.

Your key tasks in this role will be:

  • To administer and develop processes which support the YAS Facilitating Group, the Working Groups and YAS plenary meetings
  • To administer and develop the selection process for new YAS members
  • To maintain a timetable of YAS activities and organise internal communications to ensure member engagement
  • To maintain and develop the YAS website and YAS social media accounts
  • To create promotional material to support YAS activities
  • To administer the mentoring scheme between RSE Fellows and YAS members
  • To represent YAS within the RSE and at external meetings and events
  • To maintain a record of impact and activities 


The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate some good experience of working with committees, or voluntary organisations, including organising events.  You should be able to communicate effectively through e-mail and be a confident user of the web and social media.  Good attention to detail and the ability to take minutes and produce clear and concise reports are essential.  You should be well motivated with the ability to work using your own initiative and as part of a small team.  This includes the ability to balance workloads and prioritise tasks.  Some design skills would be desirable.
