Spring 2013 Startup Science Masterclasses Dates Announced

Twice a year, the RSE and partner universities deliver a series of free Science Masterclasses across Scotland. At these Masterclasses, S1 and S2 students get up to all sorts of scientific mischief and mayhem, dissections and designs, creating things from bagpipes to perfume and breaking down plant DNA, exploring the bug world around us, learning how to design things, from planes to bridges, and even indulging in a round of chemical cluedo!

Spring Masterclasses

The spring 2013 Masterclass dates have been now been confirmed. The masterclasses run across 4 consecutive Saturday's during March, April and May and this year will be taking place in Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Dundee. The confirmed dates are as follow:

Glasgow University

11 May – How to be a Bridge Builder with Joanna Cholewa

18 May – How to be an astrophysisct with Lewis Mackenzie

1 June – How to be an aeroplane designer with Peter Murray

8 June – How to be a rocket scientist with Alasdair Wilson

Dundee University

27 April – The Mating Game – assortative mating in humans  with Dr S. Hubbard

4 May –  The Genome Detectives  with Dr D. Booth and Dr D. Martin

11 May –  The Magical and Mysterious World of Chemistry with Dr N. Brewer

18 May – Be a Hogwart’s Wizard Grader with Dr L. Morris           

Heriot – Watt University

4 May – DNA extraction using Kitchen Chemistry with Dr. Lynn Paterson

11 May – Chemical Cluedo with Dr. Magnus Bebbington

18 May – Mystery of Magnetism with Dr. Bill MacPherson

25 May – Gizmo Lab with Dr. Jim Herd

St Andrews University

23 March – Bagpipes and electronics (Physics) with Bruce Sinclair 

Break for Easter Holidays

20 April – Chemical Cluedo (Chemistry) with Dr Sharon Ashbrook.

27 April – It’s a Wonderful Life (Geosciences) with Ruth Robinson and Stuart Allison

4 May – Marine Biodiversity (Biology) with Rebecca Aspden
