Proposals for changes to entry requirements for teacher education in Scotland

Posted 16/05/2013

The RSE Education Committee and the Learned Societies Group on Scottish Science Education, of which the RSE is a member, have responded to the GTCS call for views on proposals for entry requirements to programmes of teacher education in Scotland.

Both the RSE Education Committee and the Learned Societies Group are concerned by the absence in the proposals of any requirement for those applying to enter programmes of primary teacher education to have a science qualification. They also call for the requirements for mathematics to be strengthened. The responses draw on evidence which highlights the limited knowledge and understanding in mathematics and science of primary teachers and the resulting lack of confidence as a major cause for concern.
