European funding concerns raised

Posted 14/01/2015

European Commission proposals to reduce the Horizon 2020 budget for research and innovation by €2.7bn have been questioned by the President of the RSE, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and the Chief Executive of SCDI, Ross Martin, in a joint letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.

They write, "Research funding from Horizon 2020 supports cutting-edge innovation and research across Europe that is often not funded elsewhere, and which makes a direct contribution to the European economy, jobs and growth. Horizon 2020 has a strong focus on encouraging SMEs across Europe to collaborate and to develop ideas and innovations which enhance these important contributions to Europe's well-being."

The full letter can be read here.

The intervention follows the RSE President writing to the UK Prime Minister about the matter in December 2014. Read her letter here. View the reply from UK Universities and Science Minister, The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP here.
