Launch of International Year of Light
The United Nations has named 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.
An event at the RSE today (Monday 23 February 2015) marked the Scottish launch of the International Year by exploring how light is fundamental to the existence of life on earth, and the ways in which it plays an increasingly important role in shaping our society through medicine, communications, entertainment and culture.
Various speakers and exhibitors were involved, including Professor Malcolm Longair CBE FRS FRSE, Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and Professor Robert Crawford FRSE, University of St Andrews. Read the full programme.
The event also saw the launch of Light Box, which features poetry by Professor Crawford and photography by Norman McBeath, commissioned by the University of St Andrews.
A summary report and recording of the talks will be available shortly.
